It's probably the most used room in the house so it's no wonder the kitchen is also one of the trickiest to keep clean. As well as a daily wipe down, it regularly needs a deep-clean to keep it free from grease and grime.
Luckily the GHI team know everything there is to know about keeping a kitchen spotless! Here's a list of our best deep cleaning hacks - everything from descaling your kettle to keeping your hob sparkling.
The GHI's 20 best kitchen deep cleaning hacks
1
Freshen up your chopping boards
Rub a stained chopping board with half a lemon or a cloth soaked in lemon juice, leave it to work its magic overnight, then wash as normal. The citric acid is a natural bleaching agent that'll take on even tough, tomato-based stains. For an extra oomph, sprinkle it with salt first.
2
Stay on top of oven spills
Cleaning the oven is a job no one loves to do. Prevention is better than cure so line the bottom shelf of your oven with a clean baking tray or a Lakeland Magic Non-Stick Oven Liner - non-stick, dish-washable sheets that come in many different sizes to suit all ovens - before you use it. Whichever you use, give it a wipe down after every use.
3
Keep your food processor stain-free
If smoothies or curry stains on the food processor bowl don't come out after a wash, try wiping the bowl with kitchen paper moistened in vegetable oil, then washing it with hot soapy water to remove any leftover marks.

Make the most of your dishwasher
Just when you thought you couldn't love your dishwasher more than you already do, you discover that can also use it clean more than your cutlery and plates! Sanitise all sorts of tricky-to-clean fittings, such as fridge shelves, sink plugs, extractor fan filters, knife blocks, microwave turntables and even oven and fridge shelves by running them on a hot wash.
5
Get to those nooks and crannies
Top of the fridge? High shelf? We all have spots in our kitchens that are hard to reach and therefore hard to clean. Make light work of it by investing in a long-handled duster. You can also use it (or your vacuum cleaner’s crevice attachment) to clean into that niggly inch between your fridge and countertop.
6
Dress the drawers in your fridge
Protect the shelves in your fridge and make it much easier to clean with some shelf liners. All you'll need: some kitchen towel or an old newspaper. Fully line the bottom of your fridge drawers with a few sheets. That way, you can simply lift out the lining and tip old onion skin and other stray pieces of veg straight into the food bin. The same trick will work for bread bins, in-cupboard kitchen bins and food drawers.

Spot clean as you go
For a quick spot clean in cupboards, drawers or around the worktops you can't beat a handeld vacuum cleaner. And, they work a treat on cushioned kitchen chairs. Looking for something that is even less effort to tackle the floors? Try out one of our best robot vacuum cleaners.
8
Tackle microwave smells
To eliminate bad odours and loosen dried-on stains, just add several tablespoons of vinegar or half a lemon to a bowl of cold water (making sure the bowl is no more than half full) and crank up the heat to high — basically, until the water boils and window steams. Remove then wipe the inside and outside with a sponge, and hey presto!
9
Burnt on hob debris, sorted!
Battling with a hard-to-shift stain (such as milk or egg) on a stainless-steel hob? Dip a piece of kitchen towel or cloth into a solution of biological laundry detergent and lay on the mark. The enzymes in the detergent will help to break it down. Remove it, then use a sponge to loosen the grub.
Or, dip an old toothbrush in a solution of all-purpose surface cleaner, like Method Multi-Surface Spray, and use it to gently remove cooking grime from awkward areas.
GHI Tip: You can remove burned-on bits with a metal spatula or a special hob scraper for fancy induction hobs.

Tackle tea and coffee stains in a flash
If your cups are ringed with brown tea stains, soak in a solution of biological washing detergent or well-diluted household bleach. Leave for at least five minutes before thoroughly rinsing. You'll see instant results.
11
Stop your bin from smelling
It's a challenge to stop your kitchen bin from smelling, especially when the weather is hot.
When you change the bag, freshen the bin with Jeyes Freshbin powder or bicarbonate of soda, then spray with disinfectant and wipe dry. If the bin's looking particularly gruesome, hose it down first outside and leave to dry completely.
Those without gardens can do the same but in the bathtub. Just remember to give it a thorough clean before your next dip.
12
Clean the dishwasher
Pop a cup of white vinegar in the base of your dishwasher and run a normal cycle.
Alternatively, use a branded dishwasher cleaning product (such as Dr Beckmann Service It Deep Clean dishwasher cleaner) to leave it spotless and mould-free.

Stock up on bicarb
This baking ingredient is also an effective, cheap and eco-friendly cleaner! It's great for:
- Absorbing food odours in the fridge. Fill a ramekin with bicarb and leave it to work its magic.
- Cleaning countertops, microwaves and cooking utensils. Just mix bicarb into a paste with a little water and use to scrub.
- Freshening stale-smelling sponges. Mix bicarb with water and leave the sponge to soak in it.
15
Faff-free kettle descaling
Fill your kettle with a mixture of distilled white vinegar and the same amount of water and leave to soak overnight. When you wake up, empty and rinse the kettle thoroughly, then boil up with fresh water and discard *it to avoid a vinegary tang to your first brew!

Blitz burnt-on pan stains
Scrambled eggs stuck to your favourite pan?
Fill it with water and a dishwasher tablet, or 1 tbsp biological washing powder. Place it on the hob, bring to the boil and leave to simmer for around ten minutes - all the nasty burnt bits will simply lift away, leaving your pan looking as good as new.
Repeat as necessary, then wash as usual.
GHI Tip: You can also use this method for hob-safe roasting tins.
17
Spritz your taps as you go
For sparkling taps that are free from scaly deposits, fill a spray bottle with a solution of equal parts distilled white vinegar and water, or water and lemon juice, and keep it under the kitchen sink. Get into the habit of spraying the taps and sink surroundings while you wait for the sink to fill or the kettle to boil, then wipe clean.
18
Clean copper in a flash
Use ketchup (yes, you read that correctly!) to help dissolve tarnish on copper pots and other copper cooking accessories. Just massage the tomato sauce over the surface - add a dash of salt to your polish if you come across especially stubborn spots - then wipe clean.

A speedy way to shine surfaces
Spray surfaces such as kitchen surfaces, the toaster (unplugged), the fridge door and cupboard doors and handles with distilled white vinegar and then wipe down with a clean cloth.
GHI Tip: Add a very light coating of olive oil to metal handles to prevent future fingerprint marks, or to shine wooden kitchen utensils.

Upgrade your kitchen storage
It's easy for tins and packets to collect in the back of your cupboards and go off before you get a chance to use them.
