Michael V. Knudtson, 28, was charged Monday in Waushara County Circuit Court with five felony counts of hit-and-run driving resulting in injuries. He also faces up to $25,000 in fines. Authorities said he left the scene of the near head-on collision Saturday between his car and the ambulance. Five people were injured in the 2:19 a.m.

accident on State 21 at 20th Drive in the Town of Marion. Among the injured were the ambulance driver, two other medical personnel who were in the ambulance, and a patient. The occupants of the Waushara County ambulance were en route to Berlin Memorial at the time of the crash, according to court documents. All the injured were treated and released from Berlin Memorial. They suffered bumps and bruises, said Waushara County Emergency Medical Services Director Jerry Miller.

In the wake of the crash, Miller said he is working on lining up a replacement for the ambulance that was damaged in the accident. "We're OK on personnel, but we need to find a loaner ambulance. The one in the accident will have to go back to the factory for some fairly significant repairs," Miller said. The accident occurred after ambulance personnel responded to a call at a Town of Dakota home where Cody A. Koloske, 19, was injured when his 26- year-old aunt stumbled into him and knocked him down.

Koloske was unsteady at the time of the mishap because he was recovering from back and hip injuries from a previous accident, according to an incident report released by the Waushara County Sheriff's Department. The ambulance carrying Koloske was eastbound on State 21 when the car driven by Knudtson went through the stop sign on 20th Drive, began traveling westbound on 21, crossed the centerline and struck the ambulance, according to the police report. The Knutson vehicle struck the front and side portion of the ambulance, police said. Ambulance driver Bradley Goettl, 19, and crew members Jessica May, 25, and Robert Basse, 35, were injured in the crash. A passenger in the Knudtson car, Bruce A.

Brustman, 49, was also injured in the accident. One of the ambulance attendants told police that he saw the driver of the car that struck the ambulance run from the scene on foot toward the Silver Pond subdivision after the crash. The attendant was able to describe the man's clothing. Green Lake County sheriff's personnel responded to the scene with their K-9 unit and helped search for the driver, according to the incident report. Police later found Knudtson near a house in the subdivision, his clothing wet and bloodied.

He admitted being the driver of the car, according to court documents. Waushara County ambulances transported all the injured. Marquette County Emergency Services covered Waushara County calls while the transports were made. Patricia Wolff writes for the Oshkosh Northwestern.
