Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Use your air fryer to roast up tomatoes, onions, garlic, and even brown up your cheese. Then, blend it with some liquids to your desired consistency for a comforting soup that’s absolutely loaded with flavor.

I think it beats standing over the stove or precariously roasting a tomato over an open flame any day!

Soup is just always so warming and hearty, and perfect for a light meal. I like making a big batch and then just reheating a cup at a time for easy lunches throughout the week.

What You’ll Need: Ingredients

Deliciously Easy Air Fryer Roasted Tomato Soup Recipe - Dinners Done Quick (3)
  • 4 Roma tomatoes, halved
  • 10 oz cherry tomatoes
  • 1 Onion, quartered lengthwise and widthwise (red, yellow, or sweet)
  • 1 Garlic bulb, top removed
  • 4 oz Herb & garlic soft cheese (such as Boursin) cut into cubes
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and pepper (approx ½ tsp ea)
  • ¼ cup heavy cream or half & half (or more if desired)
  • 2 leaves fresh basil
  • Croutons (optional)

Ingredient Tips and Substitutions

  • I am using an heirloom cherry tomato mix for variety, but any cherry or grape tomatoes are fine
  • The best onions are red, sweet, or yellow. I used half red, half sweet here
  • Boursin pre-cubed cheese is very convenient, but you can also chop up a larger block. The herb and garlic is best I think, but the shallot and chive variety works well too
  • Olive oil may be swapped out for avocado oil, grapeseed oil or a similar high smoke point oil if preferred
  • This recipe is very adjustable to taste. You can add more tomatoes if you like it thinner, less cheese if you want to reduce thickness, and reduce garlic if you want it less bold
  • Fat free half and half works great in this recipe if you’d like to reduce calories a bit, or you may substitute a non-dairy milk as well

Recipe FAQs

Can You Really Make Soups in an Air Fryer?

Yes, you can make soups in an air fryer, though there are some exceptions.

Air fryers are ideal for roasting veggies, cooking meats, and browning or melting cheeses. Once you’ve got those cooked up, you’ll want to add liquids and grains or pasta afterwards.

With something like chicken noodle, you’ll cook the chicken and veggies in your air fryer, and then may add to broth and pasta cooked on the stove or in the microwave.

For the roasted tomato soup here, though, since it has no pasta and very little liquid, almost all of this soup can be made in the air fryer.

What Happens When You Put Tomatoes in the Air Fryer?

When you put tomatoes in the air fryer they will become very juicy inside, while getting a wrinkly and sometimes browned skin.

This is great for making soup, pasta sauce, and any other time you’d like to enjoy a juicy, warm tomato in your dish.

If you overcook them, however, you’ll turn them leathery or even crispy, so it’s important to keep an eye on them.

Can You Reheat Soup in an Air Fryer?

You can reheat soup in an air fryer, but you’ll need to place it in an oven-safe bowl to do so.

Fill your bowl about ⅔ full with soup, cover with foil, and air fry at 375°F for approximately 5-10 minutes, or until heated through. Stir halfway to help with even heating.

This method definitely takes longer than a microwave, but if you don’t have a microwave it’s a great alternative.

Recipe Pro Tips

  • An immersion (stick) blender will give you a pretty chunky consistency (as pictured). If you prefer smoother, use a regular blender instead
  • This tomato soup comes out in a bisque-like consistency, which is hearty and perfect for dipping rolls, grilled cheese, etc
  • Add additional cream, stock, and/or tomatoes if you would like a thinner consistency

Storage and Reheating

  • Store leftover tomato soup in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Alternatively, you may freeze soup in single serving portions or one large batch for up to 3 months
  • Reheat soup in the air fryer in a foil-covered oven safe bowl for 5-10 minutes at 375°F, stirring halfway. Alternatively, warm in the microwave for about 1 minute on high, or in a saucepan on the stove

Hi, my name is Katie Vine, and I love food!

I enjoy trying new recipes, creating my own, and dabbling with new techniques all the time. My husband loves to protest when I make him my guinea pig, but it’s all for the love of food!

My cooking philosophy is that great tasting food doesn't have to be complicated or time consuming to make. I'm a home cook with over 20 years of experience feeding myself and others. I've learned from a variety of different people, things I've learned online, and some trial and error as well.

I enjoy cooking a variety of foods, from convenience to comfort foods, as well as international cuisine. You can rest assured that all of my recipes have been actually made, thoroughly tested, and most importantly: tasted! I want you to enjoy my food as much as I do!
